The U.S.S. Enterprise investigates the planet Beta III, where the starship U.S.S. Archon mysteriously disappeared over one-hundred years ago. After the initial landing party begins exhibiting strange behaviour, Captain Kirk takes a second group down to the planet surface; here he finds that the peaceful inhabitants seem slow and sluggish, displaying a lack of free-will, and controlled by a group of lawgivers called ‘The Body’, which is in turn controlled by a tyrannical ruler known as Landru. However, these docile people rapidly transform into a violent mob at the coming of the ‘Red Hour’, a festival that is their only respite from the dictatorial hold that Landru has over them. When the Enterprise becomes drawn from its orbit, Krik realises that his crew will be absorbed into the Body, the same fate suffered by the Archon. He and Lieutenant Commander Spock make contact with a group of Archon survivors, who have formed an underground movement to fight the Body; with their aid, the two Starfleet officers confront Landru, only to discover that the ‘tyrant’ is in fact an extremely complex computer built by a scientist named Landru, who lived six-thousand years before; the original Landru wanted to guide his people into a peaceful, civilised time, but he only gave the computer his scientific thoughts and memories, not his wisdom; the computer has carried out Landru’s suggestions to the point that no-one is allowed independent thought. Can Kirk convince the machine to see the error of its ways...?
